Kavitha Thirumalai Biography:
Kavita is an ardent student of Bharatanatyam and has trained under several gurus including Meera Chandrashekar (Nagpur, India), Ramya Ramnarayan (Dayton, New Jersey), Vidhya Subramanian (Cupertino, CA), and Poornima Ashok (Bangalore, India). She has performed in several dance-dramas & group performances for Lasya Dance Academy and has given solo mArgam performance both in India and the US. She has had the honor of performing with Guru Smt. Rhadha’s productions in the US.
She has four solo thematic dance productions to her credit: "Kodaiyin Kanavu" (Andal’s nAchiyAr thirumozhi), "nAtya rUpa sangIta rAmAyaNam" (select compositions from rAmanAtakam), “sapta dhArA” (an exploration of the number 7), and Ānandam (Infinite Bliss) which she has staged in many venues. She continues to take master classes in Abhinaya from Guru Smt. Bragha Bessel. She is the co-curator of a Bharatanatyam Dance Festival, IDIA, in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was also recently nominated for an Izzies award (http://www.izzies-sf.org/) for Outstanding Achievement in Performance – Individual category.
